Medpak Created a Fully Natural Shampoo—No PEGS

What happens when a shampoo skips PEG ingredients? Does it compromise the performance? Many brands worry that removing these synthetics will lead to poor texture, weak lather, or reduced shelf stability.

A hair care brand, which has been our loyal client for years, raised this concern, and we gladly took on this challenge to develop a fully natural shampoo that delivers the same luxurious feel—without petrochemicals.

Creating a product without PEG chemicals is possible. As a cosmetic manufacturer who wants innovation, Medpak Solutions turned a concern into a breakthrough for natural hair care.

Developing a PEG-Free Shampoo: The Brand’s Biggest Hurdle

Peg Free Shampoo

Hair Care Brand sought to develop a fully natural, PEG-free shampoo to meet their customers’ demand for clean beauty products. Since traditional shampoos commonly use PEG (polyethylene glycol ingredient) compounds as emulsifiers and thickeners, their consumer have shifted away from synthetic ingredients.

This has prompted the Hair Care Brand to reach out to us and develop a PEG-free formula that their customers will love.  But this is not an easy feat,  there are several challenges head on:

Maintaining Performance: PEG-free alternatives needed to deliver the same luxurious lather and cleansing power as conventional shampoos.

Formulation Stability: Natural ingredients usually separate or degrade faster, which leads to shelf-life concerns.

Eco-Friendly Packaging: A fully sustainable solution was required to align with the brand’s commitment to clean beauty.

Regulatory Compliance: The shampoo had to meet clean beauty certification standards without synthetic additives.

Our Approach to PEG-Free Haircare Innovation

Peg Free Shampoo

Medpak Solutions worked closely with the Hair Care Brand to develop an effective, natural alternative while maintaining high-performance standards. Through extensive research and development, we’ve successfully addressed the challenges with a structured approach.

We replaced PEG-based compounds.

Sodium cocoyl isethionate, a coconut-derived surfactant, was used to create a dense, creamy lather while providing gentle cleansing. To achieve the desired viscosity and texture, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, extracted from the guar bean, was incorporated as a thickener to improve application and rinseability.

For emulsification and stability, we chose glyceryl stearate citrate, sourced from plant-based fatty acids, to replace PEG-based emulsifiers. This ingredient guarantees uniform distribution of oils and water that prevents separation and maintains consistency over time.

No separation and degradation in the formula.

To maintain product consistency and performance, extensive stability testing was conducted under various temperature and humidity conditions. This process identified potential formulation weaknesses and allowed for adjustments to prevent separation or early degradation.

Ingredient Ratios: We adjusted the balance of the natural emulsifier (glyceryl stearate citrate) to improve phase stability.

Preservation Strategy: Natural antioxidants, like tocopherol (vitamin E), were incorporated to protect sensitive oils from oxidation.

Emulsion Integrity: The combination of cetearyl alcohol and xanthan gum provided structural support, which will prevent ingredient separation over time.

Shelf Life Optimization Our tests confirmed that the shampoo maintained its intended texture, viscosity, and performance for an extended period without synthetic stabilizers.

Guaranteed eco-friendly packaging without compromise.

Since the Hair Care Brand promotes sustainability, we offered packaging solutions aligned with their clean beauty principles without sacrificing durability or functionality. Materials were carefully selected to minimize environmental impact while maintaining product protection and usability.

Biodegradable Options: We sourced bottles and tubes made from sugarcane-derived bioplastics, which is a renewable alternative to petroleum-based plastics.

Sustainable Sourcing: Our team collaborated with suppliers to verify compliance with clean beauty standards and ensure raw materials met environmental and ethical guidelines.

Low-Waste Production: The lightweight packaging designs have reduced material usage without affecting durability. This has lowered the overall carbon footprint.

Medpak Solutions made sure to support brand sustainability goals and consumer expectations for environmentally responsible packaging choices.

Followed clean beauty and regulatory standards.

The PEG-free shampoo adhered to clean beauty and regulatory standards since we made sure all ingredients complied with industry certifications for natural and organic cosmetics. This commitment included validating the sourcing and purity of each component to align with established certification bodies (USDA, COSMOS, and ECOCERT) for transparency and safety.

The formulation met global clean beauty regulations, which helped to build and maintain consumer confidence by assuring them of the shampoo’s authenticity and integrity. This approach not only fulfills regulatory requirements but also supports market demands for ethical and sustainable beauty products.

As we prioritized these standards, the Hair Care Brand’s commitment to environmental and consumer safety has been reflected in the shampoo product.

What is PEG in Shampoo, and Why Are They Controversial?

PEGs, or polyethylene glycols, are commonly used in shampoos, skin creams, and a variety of other personal care products as emulsifiers, surfactants, and thickeners. These glycols help products maintain the desired consistency, improve texture, and promote easier spreading.

However, PEGs have raised concerns due to their potential health risks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies PEGs as non-toxic but notes that some PEG compounds may be contaminated with impurities such as ethylene oxide, a substance classified as a carcinogen.

According to the safety evaluation of PEGs, this ingredient can sometimes cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, particularly when used in high concentrations. As consumers become more conscientious about what they put on their bodies, the demand for products free from these potentially harmful ingredients has surged. This has led many brands, including Medpak Solutions, to explore safer, more natural alternatives.

Ingredients We Avoid

In addition to eliminating PEGs, we make sure the shampoo contains no harmful ingredients commonly found in conventional formulations. These include:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): A harsh detergent that can strip the hair and scalp of natural oils.

Parabens: Preservatives that have been linked to hormone disruption and potential health risks.

Phthalates: Chemical compounds often linked to health concerns, including reproductive issues, and are excluded from formulations.

Synthetic Fragrances: Artificial scents can be irritating to the skin and may contain harmful chemicals.

Silicones: Can build up on the hair over time, leaving it looking dull and weighed down.

For the Hair Care Brand, Medpak Solutions has successfully created a fully natural shampoo free from PEGs by focusing on high-quality, safe ingredients. By avoiding potentially harmful chemicals and using plant-based alternatives, the shampoo meets consumer demands for clean beauty without compromising on performance. What are the side effects of propylene glycol in shampoo?

Propylene glycol is not inherently harmful, but it can be harsh on your hair and scalp. It may lead to hair loss, scalp irritation, and itchiness by stripping away natural oils. Prolonged use can also damage the hair’s cell structure, leaving it looking brittle and unhealthy.

No, propylene glycol is not banned in Europe. It is commonly used in a variety of industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. However, there’s an ogoing debate about its safety and the regulatory guidelines surrounding its use.

PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) is also referred to as polyethylene oxide (PEO) or polyoxyethylene (POE), with the name varying based on its molecular weight. Its chemical structure is commonly represented as H−(O−CH2−CH2)n−OH.

PEGs are classified by the FDA as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use in food and cosmetics. However, the production process of PEG can result in toxic byproducts, and the raw materials used to make PEG are considered highly toxic and may have carcinogenic properties.
