Traditionally, PEGs are a versatile ingredient in shampoos due to their emulsifying, cleansing, and solubilizing properties. Despite their widespread use, these compounds came from petroleum. More often, it contains trace levels of 1,4-dioxane. That’s why it’s a substance flagged by environmental regulators for its persistence and possible toxicity.
According to Green Seal, a global nonprofit committed to sustainability, PEG compounds also present concerns regarding bioaccumulation and skin sensitivity. This is especially true in leave-on applications or products marketed as “natural.”
In response, Medpak Solutions’ R&D team developed a shampoo that excludes all forms of PEGs. Our company uses a carefully balanced combination of plant-derived surfactants, biodegradable solubilizers, and conditioning agents such as betaine and polyquaternium alternatives. In fact, the formulation utilizes ingredients like sodium cocoyl isethionate and decyl glucoside. For transparency, we always select each ingredient for their mildness, foaming ability, and biodegradability.
Achieving comparable viscosity, cleansing strength, and sensory experience without PEGs required multiple rounds of lab trials. “Our chemists had to recalibrate the surfactant system to maintain foam stability and rinseability, especially in hard water conditions,” says Vincent Caballer, CEO of Medpak Solutions. “We also wanted the fragrance and natural oils to stay evenly dispersed without synthetic solubilizers.”
The final result is a sulfate-free, PEG-free shampoo that is gentle on the scalp, biodegradable, and performance-matched to conventional formulations.
This PEG-free shampoo signals more than just a single innovation. It reinforces Medpak Solutions’ broader role as a manufacturer equipped to support clean beauty brands.
